We at IKEUCHI ORGANIC have always had a special feeling and appreciation for New York, ever since we received the Best New Product Award at the New York Home Textile Show, where we first exhibited in 2002.
On July 10, 2015, IKEUCHI ORGANIC opened a store-in-shop in J B Design in Brooklyn, New York, and we have designated that day as New York Day in the IKEUCHI ORGANIC calendar. Thanks to your support, we are celebrating our first anniversary this year.
To commemorate this anniversary, IKEUCHI ORGANIC will launch the “Brooklyn Sustainable Line,” which is sold exclusively in Park Slope, a food co-op in Brooklyn, as well as overseas, at its directly managed stores in Japan and at its official online store.
We met Food Coop Park Slope through J B design. Many food co-ops in the U.S. are independently owned and operated, and Park Slope is known not only for its unique operating policies and successful business model, but also for its strict rules and commitment to the products it carries. All staff members are required to work in the store without pay once every four weeks, and the products they sell have their own organic standards, which must be approved by all members (approximately 15,000). Organic certification is not only a matter of meeting certain standards, but also a costly procedure, which is a heavy burden for small-scale farmers. We are not overly dependent on certification bodies for organic certification, but rather we verify what we can see with our own eyes based on our own standards, and we actively support farmers by accepting foods that are equivalent to organic quality but cannot be approved. We are committed to a sustainable future, just as we are.
We echoed that idea and began producing products for FoodCorp Park Slope and began selling them last fall. We have been working on sustainable manufacturing since early on, but this Brooklyn Sustainable line is made from different lots of yarn, yarn that could not be used up and could not be made into products, and fabrics that were dyed in different colors due to the delicacy of the 100% organic cotton. We also make products using fabrics made from 100% organic cotton, which is too delicate to be used up in the dyeing process.
Currently, our products are sold at stores in Canada, England, Taiwan, and other countries that understand the concept, and our sustainable efforts are spreading all over the world. We would like to use this New York Day as an opportunity to present our products in Japan and continue to spread our efforts and craftsmanship around the world.
